I was over the moon when I got a commission to make corner hinges, to be fitted onto new windows at the Glasgow School of Art.
Three reasons, it was a nice job to do, I would have gone up to visit site when completed and the fact that I am an admirer of what Charles Rennie Mackintosh gave to us.
Anyone who has seen our logo, may not have realised that that design of it, is Mackintosh inspired, so now you can see the connection and what I was so excited about in doing the job.
We were literally days away from getting them finished, ready to assemble and this happened!
These parts you can see, we destined to be fitted onto new frames, ready to be fitted into the openings.
Such a sad loss to the world and the people of Glasgow and Scotland.

Catch for Sliding Window
These are generically known as Fitch Catches and we do many different types - we also remake some of the obsolete ones.
These are used on sliding windows - either Vertical Sliding Sashes (VSS) that slide up and down or or on Horizontal Sliding Sashes (HSS) that slide horizontally.
We have just made another batch of these.
These are the cams, ready for assembly.
These are the assembled catches.
If you are looking for catches that work on sliding windows, please give us a call on 0116 2742195 or drop us an email on sales@cavendish-hardware.co.uk

Roller Shutter Brush Guide Seal.
During the pre Christmas clean up, I came across some old artwork.
These were drawn up by the same guy that did our calendars and show a product that we developed to stops draughts and rattles on Roller Shutters.
There are several out there now but we were the very first ones to do it and the photos below show the pre-production items, that were fitted onto our own Roller Shutter and still going strong, well over 20 years later.
This close up shot, shows how the brush fits neatly into the depressions of the shutter lath, particularly where the lath joins together.
To get the right gauge of brush filament, the right length and the correct angle, to many attempts but the final result made the effort worth it.
Our shutter is never going to be the most energy efficient way of filling an opening but with the Guide Seal, it is certainly a lot less draughty and a lot quieter when windy, as the pressure of the brush helps prevent the curtain from rattling in the guides.
We still have stocks of Guide Seal and based on our experience, we know that it is effective in reducing rattles and draughts.
It comes in 3m lengths, can be cut and butt jointed and simply pushes on to the edge of the guide.
Can be cut around most pin locks, with the only modification to an existing shutter, being to slightly extend the bottom rail cut-backs. On a new installation, the extended cut-back can be specified during manufacture.
Give us a call on 0116 2742195 or if you prefer, ping us an email on: sales@cavendish-hardware.co.uk

Happy New Year!
Well, I know I'm a bit late but it's the thought that counts.
Another simple job but a requirement for the customer to complete a refurb.
As it is a simple part and only a few were needed, these were done by hand and powder coated.
On this occasion, not by my hands but by Catherine's.
Neat Job!!
The thing is, with a lot of small parts like these, they may look insignificant but it's a bit like the old saying "For want of a nail" - until these little parts were fitted, the job was considered "incomplete"!

December
Well, this is the last of the Calendar Characters.

This was many years ago - must have been, when was the last time we had any amount of snow on Christmas eve?
We did a lot of work for the local authorities, including call outs, for pretty much 365 days of the year.
A tree had leaned over do to the weight of the snow and damaged a leaded light.
It was late on in the evening and a call was put through for our help.
The roads were bad, so it was going to be difficult anyway but the guy on the phone didn't seem to be bothered about that but eventually said leave it - someone has taped some cardboard over the inside.
What a relief, back to the fireside!
When we did get there, the damage - luckily for them, was minimal - a couple of stoppings and that was it. All we would have done on the night, is perhaps little more than what they did - taking them all of 5 minutes to sort.
Anyway, that's it for 2017 - I hope all of you have a great Christmas break and we'll be back in the new year.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
From all at Cavendish Hardware.
